| Q. |
What causes snoring? |
| A. |
Simple snoring is usually caused
by the lower jaw (or mandible) relaxing and falling
back. This restricts the airway and allows the
tongue to rub against the soft tissue at the back
of the throat. This combination of events causes
the snoring noise. When you sleep the muscles
of the jaw and throat relax, allowing the jaw
to drop back and narrow the airway at the back
of the throat. The narrow airway acts like the
pipe in an organ, the air speeds up and vibrates
causing snoring.

|
| Q. |
Why do I snore sometimes
but not at others? |
| A. |
The conditions which allow the
muscles of the jaw and throat to relax are not
always consistent. Tiredness, a cold, nasal or
throat infections, alcohol, physical work or stress
can trigger those conditions.

|
| Q. |
Why has my snoring
worsened as I've got older? |
| A. |
When we first start snoring we
may be fairly young but it may only occur rarely
when the situations above are extreme. But as
we get older the muscles lose their firmness in
the neck, throat and jaw that allows the jaw to
drop more and make the airway even narrower. Most
people also put on weight as they age.

| Q. |
How does my weight
affect snoring? Does losing weight and doing more
exercise help stop snoring? |
| A. |
Being overweight is one of the
main causes of snoring. Simply put, being overweight
causes the airway to be smaller, the tongue larger,
and soft palate larger (and softer). All of these
changes contribute to snoring, breathing, and
sleeping problems. You can often predict a snorer
by the size of the neck. Carrying excess weight
and not exercising is not the cause of snoring,
but they will make things worse. Losing weight
and doing more exercise are good for you and will
help in many cases.

| Q. |
I have been told that
I stop breathing for a few seconds then start snoring
again with a grunt an a splutter. What is happening?
What is sleep apnea? |
| A. |
What you describe is called 'sleep
apnoea' (or 'sleep apnea'). In its commonest form
the airway closes off briefly as you inhale. You
struggle to regain your breath for a few seconds
then with a grunt you start breathing again. When
this happens often it has serious consequences
for the sufferer. Reduced oxygen levels in the
blood affect the heart and brain -- and the struggle
to regain our breath starts off an automatic response
that disrupts the natural sleep patterns and over
time leaves us sleep deprived. Snoring is usually
the precursor to sleep apnea and is a possible
combination of snoring and the cessation of breathing.
Sleep apnea is a very serious health hazard. Medical
advice is highly recommended.

| Q. |
What does the medical
profession think about acupressure and health? |
| A. |
For many years Western Medicine
scoffed at acupressure and acupuncture. Acupressure,
acupuncture and all sorts of Holistic and Eastern
Medicine have been around for thousands of years,
with their advocates claiming huge successes.
Not only are natural alternative therapies far
less invasive than most Western Medicine, but
the are relatively extremely low cost. Western
Medicine has been forced to re-evaluate its assessment
of acupressure and acupuncture and often many
western doctors are advising it and incorporating
it into other conventional treatments. More and
more westerners are choosing alternative therapies
as an option to surgery, strong drugs or ridiculous
appliances.

|
| Q. |
Is there a cure for
snoring? |
| A. |
Medical science tells us that
there is no cure for snoring. Anyone claiming
to have a snoring cure, or anyone using the word
"cure" in their advertising, is making
a false and misleading statement. However, the
use of acupressure has been around for thousands
od years and there are many people who will strongly
defend the use of an antisnoring acupressure ring
as a very effective relief treatment.
